Alcohol metabolism and generation of free radicals: A deep insight
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Alcohol is readily distributed throughout the body in the aqueous blood stream after consumption as it is miscible in water. This paper critically evaluates and highlights the various aspects of alcohol metabolism and elucidates the role of Reactive oxygen species (ROS). Alcohol is rapidly absorbed in the bloodstream and metabolized primarily in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). ADH plays a crucial role in the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde, which is then converted to acetate by the actions of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The impact of alcohol metabolism on generation of ROS in the cell is linked to its metabolism via oxidative processes. It has also been observed that alcohol deplete GSH levels, particularly in the mitochondria, which normally are characterized by high levels of GSH needed to eliminate the reactive oxygen species generated during the various activities of the respiratory chain. Conclusion This paper reports the mechanism of alcohol metabolism, the role of reactive oxygen species from some of our studies and highlights the exact role of alcohol metabolism and its byproducts in the generation of ROS.

Impact of Reactive Oxygen Species on Spermatozoa: ABalancing Act between Beneficial and Detrimental Effects
Reactive oxygen species (ROS)plays an important role in sperm motility. The physiological generation at low concentration induces beneficial effects on sperm functions and plays a significant role in sperm metabolism. Meanwhile, the excessive generation of reactive oxygen species can overwhelm protective mechanism and triggers changes in lipid and protein layers of sperm plasma membrane, which ...
متن کاملOxidative Stress and Human Disease: a Review
Background: The human body needs both types of oxidants (free radicals) and antioxidants for normal metabolism, signal transduction mechanism, and the order of cellular activity. Free radicals can be either harmful or helpful to the body, in fact, they play a dual role as both toxic and beneficial compounds. The human body has the natural antioxidant defense mechanism to counteract the free rad...

Background: Free radicals and reactive oxygen species(ROS) are the most important factors in formation of oxidative stress reaction. Now, radical damage has been suggested to contribute to a wide variety of diseases such as Alzheimer, atherosclerosis and cancer. Transition metal ions in the presence of the various biomolecules produce these active compounds. The aim of this study is introducing...
متن کاملEffect of Alcohol Administration on Mg2+ Homeostasis in H9C2 Cells
Alcoholic cardiomyopathy represents one of the main clinical complications in chronic alcoholics. This pathology contrasts the seemingly beneficial effect of small doses of alcohol on the cardiovascular system. Studies carried out in liver cells exposed acutely or chronically to varying doses of EtOH indicate that intrahepatic alcohol metabolism results in a major loss of cellular Mg2+. To inve...
